About the artwork
This evocative work depicts the sculptured form of a man, whose back faces the viewer. The painting features a dark colour palette that imbues the work with a solemn atmosphere, reflected in the heightened tension conveyed by the figure’s hunched posture of contemplation. Yet despite the solemn mood, Liu creates a sense of energy through his application of paint with quick brushstrokes. By doing this, the artist presents a display of life in all its vigor, illustrating the force of human expression and the nuanced equilibrium between happiness and sadness, life and death and confusion and enlightenment.
