Afar (远方), 2014
Water Colour on Paper, 60 x 40 cm
About the artwork
While Deng Cheng Wen previously depicted his figures with their eyes concealed by the people behind them and moving precariously into ominous situations, these works showcase individuals with eyes newly opened to the world. Instead of embracing their liberation and looking forward with home, the figure depicted gazes into the distance with trepidation and anxiety. The future is as ambiguous as the wide expanse of their surroundings and the viewer cannot help but feel a sense of empathy and desire to reach out to these lost youth.
