About the artwork

This work by Yu Nancheng depicts a seemingly infinite number of figures practicing Tai Chi in front of Tiananmen Square. Yu uses an open composition, leading a sense of movement to the piece. This movement is furthered by his use of impasto, which replicates the slow and controlled motions of Tai Chi and produces a distinct textured surface. Yu’s use of horizontal layering creates depth, while the visual impact of this remarkable sight is heightened as well by the vivid “China Red” paint he depicts the figures with. Yu’s skillful understanding and use of painterly techniques thus provides viewers with a stunning visual experience.
