About the artwork

Chen Wen Ling's series titled Red Memory features naked, skinny red boys showing exaggerated expressions, with eyes full of mischief in arresting poses. The artist creates irony by playing with expressions and colors. Throughout Chinese history, red has been a symbolic and auspicious color in Southern China. By carving carefree expressions into his sculptures, the artist uses the essence of red to represent his dismissal of the pursuit of money and power. His optimistic red boys embracing life invite the viewer to reflect on tension, anxiety, fear, and cruelty of the adult world. The artist depicts his little boys embracing the present moment instead of worrying about the future, and seizing the day.
