About the artwork

Silky threads sweep though the canvas, shielding the vista from prying voyeuristic eyes. This is not about being brash or ostentatious; it is extremely subtle and exquisitely delicate. Forget about the crudeness of impasto or the heavy tangibility of installation art, Eric Chan's floral art delivers to us a return to the very core of art – the full bodied intensity of oil paint on canvas, spread out with a soft and creamy texture.

About the artist

Eric Chan (born 28 March 1975 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) is one of Southeast Asia's notable contemporary painters. He is currently based in Singapore. A Masters of Fine Art (Painting) graduate of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia and Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore, Chan has carved out a reputation for reinvigorating interest in painting as a resonant contemporary media. His paintings are shaped by photographic and camera effects and aesthetics — from the blurring or smearing of paintings, to the distinctive graphics of film negatives with tonal inversions. He has actively exhibited in Singapore and overseas including UK, Hong Kong, UAE, Australia, Malaysia, Phillipines and Indonesia. In addition, he has also enjoyed recognition for his work receiving amongst others, the Jurors' Choice at the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards (2002) and the Highly Commended accolade at the 2003 UOB Painting of the Year Competition. His works are collected by the Singapore Art Museum and in corporate and public collections such as the CapitaLand Collection, UOB Art Collection, UBS Art Collection, OCBC Art Collection and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore.
