Born in 1977, French artist Auguste hails from the famed Bordeaux region of France. Though he studied disciplines other than fine arts, Auguste always felt compelled and drawn to the art world. Ultimately he followed his passion for the visual arts, finding his unique artistic vision and voice and is now known for his colorful contemporary Pop Art-inspired and nostalgia-evoking works. Auguste terms his oeuvre “Generations” as his works revolve around a central theme of pop culture icons from the past. Conjuring memories of previous eras, his pieces depict celebrities, superheroes, and other iconic figures in conjunction with American and French marks to provide the viewer with a reminiscent glimpse of past epochs and to create a striking social commentary.

Auguste’s works feature an amalgamation of familiar pop culture icons of both past and present, such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Banksy’s Balloon Girl, Michael Jordan, and Marilyn Monroe. Recognizable logos of brands such as Chupa Chups, Ferrari, Chanel, and Starbucks are often present in his scenes as well. These images are superimposed against the vibrant neon glamour of New York’s Times Square, with occasional highlights of splattered paint. By positioning these images in association with each other, Auguste invariably links corporate branding, luxury consumer goods, and the media together, juxtaposing them against the nostalgic innocence associated with various cartoon characters, thus making a statement about the current state of consumption and contemporary society.

Working with a variety of materials, Auguste uses an unusual medium of aluminum along with digital collage and acrylic paint and uses automotive varnish (Aston Martin) to give his works a modern glossy finish as a nod to the characteristics of modern urban culture. He places importance on form and shape to create the puzzle piece contours and embraces the use of color to create captivating pieces that captivate not only due to the content but fascinating aesthetic.

Unsurprisingly, Auguste’s colourful contemporary works have captivated viewers worldwide through their blending of nostalgic and modern. His pieces are beloved by collectors for their unique subjects and form, including prominent Hollywood superstars such as Leonardo Dicaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, as well as tennis icons Gael Monfils and Stanislas Wawrinka. Auguste’s unique artistic vision has captivated viewers worldwide, and his nostalgia-evoking works have been exhibited in Europe, Asia, South Africa and the United States; both in art fairs and individual exhibitions.
