About the artwork
With his distinct style depicting rotund figures, Botero presents a pair of dancers moving with restraint. Their movement appears rigid, drawn with precision from the position of their hands to their stern expressions. However, even if movement is absent in Botero's waltz, it can still be found in the shapes of the bodies, round and dynamic, erasing all rigidity of the dance and adding warmth to an otherwise austere image. The dashes of neutral beige hues add further light, thus hinting at inherent affection and familiarity between the couple, despite them straying from conventional expressions of love.
