Lee Kuan Yew, The first Singaporean Prime Minister, who went through many different revolutionary eras in order to bring success to his country. Ren Zhen Yu, therefore in a series of painting portrays him in different ages and different periods, showing how time transforms within the context of painting, when honoring an iconic image with the use of abstract expressionism techniques. Each era is represented with a specific characteristic which informally declares the artist's visual statement in admiring the main subject of his artworks. Here in this painting, the young Lee Kuan Yew with touches of the red color, symbolizing prosperity, vitality and joy, fully conveys the prime minister's determination and intelligence, introducing him as one of the best iconic roll models to the younger generations.
About the artist
Born in Tianjin in 1976, Ren Zhenyu graduated in 1999 from the Oil Painting Department at Tianjin Academy of Fine Art, where he currently works as a lecturer. His talent was recognized and appreciated by renowned galleries and distinguished collectors throughout China, and he achieved fame in Europe through his distinct portrait series of historical and political icons, such as Andy Warhol and Chairman Mao. In his works, Ren plays with a wide spectrum of colours that are juxtaposed to create a unique expressionist interpretation of famous faces and experiments with texture and layering built on to reinforce the portrayal of faces from different perspectives.
