About the artwork
An internationally acclaimed artist with a presence in many prestigious collections around the world, Ran Hwang distorts and refreshes common perception by turning the ordinary into aesthetic masterpieces. Using buttons, beads, pins and threads, she creates mammoth installations that depict a myriad of socially and emotionally relevant subjects. Hammering each pin in by hand, the artist regards her technique as meditative, simultaneously leading to impeccable detailing as part of her canvas of wooden board. A complex coalescence of colour and layered texturing, Hwang combines not only the perspective of the grand scale versus the ordinary, but also the visual illusions of a whole image versus its defining components. These stunning visuals when seen alongside the emotional and meaningful displays of her subjects, leaves her work thought provoking and engrossing in the encompassment of perceptual fluidity; constantly inciting the viewer to look deeper and read between every hand crafted line.
