Tjokorda Bagus Wiratmaja's "Surprising" is a visceral burst of dynamic movement and bold colour. Powerful bulls, their forms suggested by swirling brushstrokes and layered textures, dominate the canvas. Locked in a struggle or a stylized dance, their interaction becomes the focal point. Fluid motions—scratching, dripping, and blending—create a richly textured, pulsating surface. Earthy tones—browns, yellows, and oranges—clash with striking accents of blue, green, red, and white. Applied gesturally, these colours swirl and collide, emphasizing the raw emotion and untamed movement.

About the artist

Tjokorda Bagus Wiratmaja was born in 1984 in Gianyar, Bali and enrolled in SMK N1 High School Sukawati with a specialization in Art, going on to graduate from The Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) in Yogyakarta with a Masters in Fine Arts. Tjokorda creates artworks stemming from intense emotion and fearless color exploration, with layered and textured canvases that sometimes use elements such as sand and pigment powder to achieve their finishing.
