About the artwork

In this work by Yayoi Kusama, abstract forms create an evocative depiction of the sea. A prominent theme in the artist’s oeuvre is the notion of infinity, and this is reflected in the subject of the work, with the great expanse of the sea conveyed through a labyrinthine web of undulating loops that pulsate with irrepressible force. They draw the viewer irresistibly towards the shimmering spaces contained within tightly woven skeins of inky pigment, that illustrate the forceful crashing of waves against the seashore. Small forms flow into each other, grow and diminish, with an undulating rhythm so deeply tuned to nature that the viewer experiences the same serenity and suppressed excitement felt in watching changing cloud formations or water ripples. There is a deep rhythm in these paintings: compelling tensions are developed, sustained, and resolved.// This work is accompanied by an artwork registration card issued by the artist's studio . Size: 24x27 Medium: mixed media on cardboard Year:1991 Unique signed and dated 1991 on the reverse Provenance : Galerie Piece Unique , Paris
