About the artwork

This painting by Lim Tze Peng captures a nostalgic and expressive view of Singapore’s riverfront, likely inspired by the Singapore River. His signature brushwork and use of traditional Chinese ink and color techniques bring out a dynamic interplay of movement and stillness. Depiction of a Bygone Era - The scene showcases shophouses, a tree in the foreground, and four traditional boats on the river, evoking Singapore’s past before rapid modernization. The vibrant yet earthy tones suggest a warm, lively atmosphere, paying tribute to the city's rich heritage. The boats, central to the composition, represent trade and commerce, which played a crucial role in Singapore’s early development. Their positioning and expressive brushstrokes give a sense of movement, reinforcing the river's importance as a lifeline for the city's economy. Lim’s calligraphic strokes and semi-abstract forms capture both the energy and imperfection of traditional riverside life. The fluidity of his lines reflects both the motion of water and the organic nature of human activity. The blend of classical Chinese painting elements with a contemporary, almost abstract touch embodies Lim’s signature style, preserving heritage while embracing artistic evolution. Overall, the painting serves as a heartfelt tribute to old Singapore, celebrating its past while acknowledging the changes brought by progress.
