Singapore’s living legend, Lim Tze Peng, tirelessly documented scenes of post-independence Singapore that captured a significant period before the rapid modernization of the city began, amassing a collection of almost 500 paintings of landmark scenes. In this work, Lim depicts a roadside food stall in Chinatown, with a number of patrons enjoying their meals. His attentive brushstrokes render the iconic architecture of Chinatown’s shophouses and their patrons with delicacy, and this is reinforced by the painting’s washes of rustic earth toned colours. Through his skillful mastery, Lim beautifully captures a fleeting moment in Singapore’s past and evokes a sense of nostalgia for bygone days.
