Singaporean artist Lim Tze Peng is renowned for his Chinese ink drawings and paintings of post-independence Singapore, as well as his calligraphy. Lim captures a scene of a Chinatown shophouse, in which a number of workers prepare goods to be sold for the day, whilst various clothing articles are hung out to dry on the upper floors. Lim renders the intricate architecture of the old shophouses through his bold brushstrokes, which he also uses expressively to add colour to the work, imbuing the scene with energy characteristic of bustling Chinatown. He skillfully balances warm and cool colours, evoking nostalgia through earth-toned colours, while also creating a sense of energy through his unexpected use of blue. Lim exquisitely manages to capture the details of the scene in this charming work, enabling us to glimpse an evocative moment in Singapore’s vivid past.
