Lim Tze Peng
LP-Bumboats in front of Elgin Bridge, 1981

Ink on Rice Paper
67 x 67cm

Lim Tze Peng is famously known for his Chinese ink drawings and paintings of iconic areas in Singapore, such as the Singapore River and Chinatown. Three bumboats are foregrounded in this work, and have vibrant washes of warm colours, which immediately draws the viewer’s eyes to them. These boats were utilized for transporting cargo in the past, and even now are a characteristic sight along the Singapore river. Lim’s placement of the boats in this composition highlight their significance, especially in scenes of the river. Elgin Bridge is depicted in the distance, with Singapore’s ever-expanding cityscape behind it, creating a sense of depth through these horizontal layers. Lim expertly captures a scene on the river through his attentive brushstrokes, imbuing it with warmth and vibrancy through washes of colour that reflect a bustling moment in the country’s past.
