In this black and white work by living legend Lim Tze Peng, a market in old Singapore is depicted. Lim’s repetition of forms brings life to the scene and highlights the bustling nature of the market, with numerous sellers hawking their various goods. Lim’s artistic skill is shown through his attention to balance and harmonious composition within the space, as he utilises positive and negative space in a nuanced manner. The negative space brings prominence to the scene depicted and imbues the work with a sense of nostalgia, by creating a faded effect that evokes feelings of wistfulness for the viewer. This nostalgia is furthered by the shophouses in the background, which are depicted in shades of grey, that denotes them as emblems of the past. Lim was committed to capturing scenes of old Singapore before the rapid urbanisation of the city began, and amassed a collection of over 500 works.
