About the artwork

This abstract work by Yayoi Kusama features one of her most recognisable motifs- Nets. Covering sheets of paper with repetitive marks helped the artist cope with the stress-induced hallucinations she had experienced since childhood, while they also playing on the notion of repetition and unbounded space. In this piece an infinite number of nets of varying sizes cover the canvas, creating a deep rhythm in which compelling tensions are developed, sustained, and resolved, much like that which is created by heavy rainfell. The depth of this work is furthered by the artist’s use of colour, as although the background is a single shade of red, it posesses a captivating luminocity and intensity that stirs strong emotions within the viewer. Through her carefully repeated arcs of paint, Kusama creates an abstract work that is both evocative and unforgettable.// Title: Rain In The Evening Glow * Raisonne No . 171 image size : 52.5x45.5 sheet size: 61x53.5 Edition : 44/ 75 Signed 1992 Screenprint Literature: All Prints of Yayoi Kusama 1979-2004 , Abe Publishing Ltd , Japan, p.123, No 171
