About the artwork

Sigmar Polke was a German artist, whose paintings and photographs incorporated unconventional materials such as meteorite dust and detergent, and is considered to be one of the most influential painters of the postwar era. In depicting this influential figure, Ren utilises a myriad of colours, mixing both warm and cool tone colours on the canvas to create a vibrant visual contrast, that conveys the whimsical and complex nature of the artist. Polke is shown to be looking towards the viewer, drawing them into the work with his cryptic gaze. Through his skilful technique, Ren immortalises this vibrant spirit, and creates a befitting tribute for a man whose influence on art is still felt today.
