Young artist Maria Jeona Zoleta graduated from the University of the Philippines with a degree in Fine Art in 2011 and already has more than a handful of solo shows under her belt, with experience exhibiting in group shows in Bangkok, Hong Kong and New York. She was nominated for the 2011 Ateneo Art Awards for her solo exhibition Tricky, Sexy, Sodomy, or The Case of Attention Seeking Whores in Manila. To an extent, Zoleta's work can be said to take up a self-conscious, rebellious positioning amongst a fresh set of female artists emerging onto the scene, both (co-)curating and participating in exhibitions such as Fishnet Strangling She-male Acupuncture Bitchfest or The Y2K Babes. The artist means to provoke and overwhelm with an excess of girly gestures and underwhelm with a lack of serious meaning - embodying an aesthetic of the current girl-revolution. Masculinity is simply disregarded in this blend of sugary kitsch coupled with in-your-face abjection (like icing spiked with speed spelling out 'shit'), where females are presented as both tricksters and muses, both coy and coarsely sexual at the same time.
