The Power of Instinct (above), a bull dashes across the canvas with its head and back streaked a dark shade of red. The facial features and limbs of the bull have deliberately been made obscure to enhance the sense of rapid movement, while the yellow and white spaces resemble violent gashes that draw one’s attention to the bull’s aggressive and fiery disposition. Tjokorda has done an excellent job of making the bull seem larger than life through his forceful impasto and heavy, quick brushstrokes. He understands that not only should his final piece depict movement – even the process through which his art is achieved must also faithfully exhibit swiftness.

About the artist

Tjokorda Bagus Wiratmaja was born in 1984 in Gianyar, Bali and enrolled in SMK N1 High School Sukawati with a specialization in Art, going on to graduate from The Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) in Yogyakarta with a Masters in Fine Arts. Tjokorda creates artworks stemming from intense emotion and fearless color exploration, with layered and textured canvases that sometimes use elements such as sand and pigment powder to achieve their finishing.
