About the artwork
A master of injecting his own bold aesthetics, ‘Korin: The Time of Celebration’ is a celebration of both past and present Japanese cultural identity. This series is a homage to the Rinpa School of Japanese painting led by the Edo painter Ogata Korin. The Rinpa school is best known for refined design and technique as well as the incorporation of natural elements. This work is able to seamlessly incorporate the elements of Rinpa style, like the tree in the middle of the painting and the red flowing river in the background, with Murakami’s own bold aesthetic. His iconographic smiling flowers, bold colours and digitally generated textures all come together to make this work a Murakami signature.
