About the artwork
In this print, Doraemon, the ubiquitous Japanese cartoon character is depicted against a white backdrop. Within his blue body are images of the other characters in the show. Using his superflat art style which he coined, Takashi Murakami elevates the status of conventionally ‘childish’ cartoons like Doraemon into the realm of high art, questioning the boundaries and distinctions of what can be called ‘art’. Even the title seems to be a fun jab; with such a cutesy tagline traditionally not considered as ‘high’ art, Murakami reminds us of a lovable character.
