In his works, Hong Zhu An has intentionally made the otherwise translucent rice paper opaque; making the paper the first layer or treatment of his paintings such that they are densely constructed by multiple layers of pigments of varying permeation. We see the rich colours produced - each distinctive, each compelling. In this particular work, calligraphy is printed against the black background, creating stark impressions in the viewer's’ senses. Memories, like the imprints on the blue background, do not fade or disappear in time but persists to live on within our minds.
