For project (jl) Edgedale Plains is a road in the Punggol area that is flanked by residential housing developments or HDBs as they are commonly known. The flats are grouped into housing estates meant to operate as self-contained satellite towns - in the sense that they have clinics, supermarkets, schools and hawker centres within close proximity to the houses. About 90% of Singaporean households own their own HDB flat - a statistic that is often cited as testament to progressive planning. Hong Sek Chern represents these iconic structures, the pride of a nation, in gradients of brown and black. She partitions the structures and segments them into layers - symbolic of the different lives and harmonious coexistence of a vibrant, multi-racial community that resides in the various blocks.
Hong Sek Chern (b.1967) graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, followed by an MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Sek Chern’s Chinese ink interpretations of the Singapore urban landscape have won her several awards, including the 26th UOB Painting of the Year Grand Prize. She was recipient of the Young Artist Award from the National Arts Council and was selected to represent Singapore at the 25th Sao Paolo Biennale. Her works are part of several institutions and prestigious collections, including Singapore Art Museum, Taipei Fine Art Museum, and the National Arts Council (Singapore)
