About the artwork
Title. DOTS A.CB signed and titled and dated 2001 on the reverse Medium: acrylic on canvas Size : 27.3x22cm executed in 2001 Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama melds and transcends the aesthetics and theories of many late twentieth century movements, including Pop Art and Minimalism, without ever taking a singular path. In this abstract work, a multitude of green dots fill the canvas, a motif that has become synonymous with the artist. The varying size of the dots creates a sense of movement and rhythm, that is furthered by the contrast between the receding black background and the warm green which advances towards the viewer. While the scale of this composition is confined, to the artist it evokes a sense of vastness, which she has previously described as reflecting “the great depth of my inner heart”.// This work is accompanied by a registration card issued by the Yayoi Kusama Studio.
