Fernando Botero
On The Beach

Water Colour on Paper
41 x 31cm

Softly tone and styled in vintage appropriations, Fernando Botero’s ‘On the Beach’ is a snapshot of an ordinary day at the beach, warmed by the sand and sun and placated further by the tepid blue waves that frame it. In characteristic style, however, the subjects of the artist’s creations are anything but expected; Straying wildly from assumed inclinations towards bikini clad midriffs and long legs is the primary subject of a full figured woman, resplendent in her nudity and exuding beauty rippling with confidence. The posture of the subject and the fruit in her hand are reminiscent of more classical formative sensibilities, with a single fruit often significant of the apple, and the temptation of Eve. Combined with the alluring directness of the woman’s gaze into the viewer, a subtle sensuality is implied, but is understated in the ordinary, that surrounds the other subjects and apparent commonplace nature of the scenery in context. Such contradiction of assumption places the viewer into a state of intrigue and appreciation in spite of their established norms of beauty.
