About the artwork
Since the creation of his iconic sculpture at the Holocaust Museum in St Petersburg, David Kracov's butterflies have come to signify the delicacy and vivacity of a child. Through his composition of artwork and titles, the artist presents us with light-hearted humour and a touch of introspection. A phrase commonly used in examinations and academic pursuits - 'Passing with Flying Colours' is a celebration of children that also serves to remind us of their freedom - often suppressed under the pressures of expectation. Thus, the artist places his symbolic subjects in a state of free flight. They are vibrant, colourful and lively - just as children are meant to be.
