About the artwork

Vegetable grocers displayed in beautiful order as illustrated. It is the old Singapore where selling fresh produce is a staple to sustain survival. Figures from young to old could demonstrate the importance of family in participating in the business of selling, hence Sim has incorporated Chinese ink to pay homage to traditions and ideal family values.

About the artist

Inspired by the influence of Chen Chong Swee and refined by the tutelage of Cheong Soo Pieng, the works of Sim Pang Liang moulded the inspirations of his first generation ink visionaries into a characteristic symphony of ever-changing contemporary style. Majoring in painting at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts where he graduated in 1961, the artist was selected to join a small group of artists in 1963 that founded the Modern Art Society. Highly recognized and a multiple award winner for his modern Chinese ink paintings, the artist has exhibited extensively in Southeast Asia and is collected by numerous prestigious institutions including national galleries in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Taipei.
