About the artwork

This work by Yayoi Kusama incorporates two of the artist’s most iconic motifs: nets and dots. After moving to New York City in 1958 the artist begin painting her ‘Infinity Nets’, playing on the notion of infinite repetition and infinite space, as the works give equal weight to the brushstrokes and the holes within them. Combining these nets with dots, stemming from the aura and visual hallucinations Kusama experienced as a child, evokes a dizzying sense of being in the cosmic universe with everything expanding into infinity. This reflects Kusama’s aim of achieving a state of obliteration, which she sought to achieve by obsessively transforming the complex images of her hallucinations into works of art. This work is accompanied by a registration card issued by the Yayoi Kusama Studio Signed and dated on the reverse Year: 1981 . Acrylic on canvas 15.8x22.7cm
