About the artwork
Yayoi Kusama is internationally recognised for her artworks, which feature recurring motifs, most notably, dots. Covering sheets of paper with repetitive marks fed her love of art, and also helped her cope with the stress-induced hallucinations she experienced. This abstract work features an infinite number of reddish-pink dots, which the artist interspersed with white lines, that reflect the movement of waves. While Kusama’s use of colour creates a wistful atmosphere, she curiously overlays this with bold black dots, that create a striking visual effect for viewers. They imbue this unique depiction of the ocean with dynamism, and demonstrate the eccentricity, that has made the artist so beloved worldwide. Year : 1978 size : 27.4x24.3cm
About the artist
Yayoi Kusama was born 1929, in Matsumoto City and began painting at the age of 10, as a means of escaping a childhood of neglect and expressing her early experiences with hallucinogenic visions. She is best known for her works best known for her works featuring repeating motifs and psychedelic imagery that evoke themes of psychology, feminism, obsession, sex, creation, destruction, and intense self-reflection.
