About the artwork

In this work by Tjokorda, three bulls are depicted in an interaction with two of their counterparts. The artist uses fierce decisive brushstrokes, depicting these animals majestically, and enriches them with deep bold colours. It is unclear whether this interaction is friendly or hostile, with the ambiguity being furthered by the artist’s positioning of three of the bulls with their backs are to the viewer. Yet through this composition, the viewer appears to be realistically watching the moment right before their eyes, generating a powerful sense of anticipation. In this work, the interactions of the Animal Kingdom are thus depicted in an evocative manner, with fearless colour exploration and skillful technique.

About the artist

Tjokorda Bagus Wiratmaja was born in 1984 in Gianyar, Bali and enrolled in SMK N1 High School Sukawati with a specialization in Art, going on to graduate from The Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) in Yogyakarta with a Masters in Fine Arts. Tjokorda creates artworks stemming from intense emotion and fearless color exploration, with layered and textured canvases that sometimes use elements such as sand and pigment powder to achieve their finishing.
