About the artwork

What is unique about Lim Tze Peng’s artworks is his ability to integrate calligraphy and painting together into what some might call “Art Calligraphy”. In this painting of a tree, Lim makes use of traditional calligraphy techniques and disciplined strokes of ink to show its exuberance and strength. The addition of light blue and dark green on different sides of the tree gives off a depth effect which is akin to shading. Similarly, with different concentrations of ink and thickness of lines, Lim creates a texturized surface which makes it seem as if one can see or even feel the coarseness of the tree bark. As its branches spread out across the paper, lush green leaves further inject a boost of vitality and bring the image to life. Having been inspired by the Indonesian art form, Batik, Lim also incorporates elements of the Nanyang (South Sea) region by using warm sepia tones, his own way of paying tribute to his Singaporean heritage – hence the name of his new series of paintings, “roots”.
