About the artwork

Ode to Motherland No. 5 presents a nuanced balance between movement and stillness, that creates an intriguing tension, and engages the viewer's imagination. Taking empirical figures, servants and warriors as his models, Cai Zhi Song uses modern techniques and materials to transform historically endowed entities into an entirely new significance. In this sculpture, the warrior’s body is distinctly contorted, with one arm raised as if to shield himself. The context of the work is ambiguous, leaving the viewer to create their own conclusion of the depicted scenario.
