KU / Clarke Quay was named after Sir Andrew Clarke who was Singapore's second Governor and Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1873 to 1875. With river trade an integral part of the economic development of Singapore in the early days, the Singapore river and banks of Clarke Quay were filled with bustling activity - bumboats mooring on the banks, coolies transporting goods to and from warehouses. Today, Clarke Quay is a trendy area with bars, nightclubs and restaurants under canopies. River cruises and river taxis traverse the waters and it is a popular tourist destination.
