About the artwork

In an ode of ink to two of Singapore’s oldest housing localities, Hong Sek Chern brings together images of homes in Tiong Bahru and Queensway. She highlights, in her characteristic style, the lines and curves that formed the iconic architecture there. Incorporating minute detailing and defining shapes such as the rounded balconies of Tiong Bahru, the artist contrasts familiarity with haunting expanses of white. She adds negative space to emphasize the faded entity that traditional homes have become in modern times. Considering its elements, the image is no longer a simple depiction of ink on paper, rather, it is transformed into a dense interpretation of stylistic homage, reminiscence and commentary upon a receding yet familiar past.
