TUP Dedicating his artistic creations to expressing Buddhist thoughts Li Chen’s sculptures are of minimalist forms and lines, embracing the Chinese philosophy of Tao, “Qi”, and energy. Round and smooth, the artist’s depictions are embodied of an internal softness. They appear meditating, or on clouds, their figures always showing inner peace and calmness. In ‘Travelling in Mountains’, Li Chen creates a representative of Buddha meditating amongst the clouds that roll in the company of towering mountains. The landscape is symbolic of both ethereal connotations as well as sacred relevance, with mountains often having mythological references in Buddhism; the figure itself is resplendent of an inner peace that clearly demarcates itself from earthly pursuits in its spirtual contentenment. With his work, the artist bridges contemporary art with ancient traditions and philosophy, acting for the survival and resistance of his culture.
