The flying hippo is yet another of Gillie and Marc’s commentary about animal conservation in their rope series. The Hippopotamus is another endangered species that the artists are concerned about. In this piece, they illustrate the animal in a different disposition from the rhinos and zebras, in a ‘flying’ stance. The composition brings an awkward sensation, one that heightens our senses to ponder on the situation. Gillie and Marc open the work to various interpretations, as some see the rope as our human actions that bind the hippos from flying, while others might decipher it as a merger effort we have to retain the hippos, to prevent them from ‘flying’ out of our world.
