About the artwork
Botero is known to create sculptures of humans and animals of his iconic style. In Woman on a Horse, he composes the two together, with the woman fastening herself firmly on the horse’s back. Botero explores this relationship, how animals are utilised for various tasks, providing for people without obligation. A spiritual balance is forged between them. ‘Boterismo’ is certainly retained in this sculpture, as both human and horse are enlarged. By opinion, the proportion is slightly skewed as the woman appears slightly larger than she should be compared the horse. Nevertheless, the horse still supports the woman, firm and steady, ready for all endeavours to go through.
