About the artwork

Joseph Beuys was a German avant-garden sculptor and performance artist, who is considered to be one of the most influential artists of the postwar period. Ren depicts this profilitic artist in this painting, with his enigmatic gaze boring into the viewer and drawing them into the work. Despite his serious expression, Ren imbues the work with a sense of vibrancy through the myriad of colours he uses, thus capturing the brilliant and eccentric inner world of an artist who created some of the most unorthodox and thought-provoking performance art pieces. Through his skilful technique and use of colour, Ren presents a befitting tribute to this great mind, who greatly influenced the development of a new form of art.

About the artist

Born in Tianjin in 1976, Ren Zhenyu graduated in 1999 from the Oil Painting Department at Tianjin Academy of Fine Art, where he currently works as a lecturer. His talent was recognized and appreciated by renowned galleries and distinguished collectors throughout China, and he achieved fame in Europe through his distinct portrait series of historical and political icons, such as Andy Warhol and Chairman Mao. In his works, Ren plays with a wide spectrum of colours that are juxtaposed to create a unique expressionist interpretation of famous faces and experiments with texture and layering built on to reinforce the portrayal of faces from different perspectives.
