About the artwork

Title: Couple Dancing Size: 41x31cm Year : 2016 Medium: Graphite on Paper In this particular sketch, Botero appears to explore an element of the human condition relating to the coexistence of men and women. Hands held in a symbolic waltz, Botero draws a diagonal line of symmetry between his two figures as they mirror each other's movements in dance, creating both balance and harmony in the image. While they are similar in both posture and obtuse form, the women's feminity is exemplified by the flowing, rounded patterns of her dress, placed in contrast against the stoic, crisp lines of the man's suit. This along with the seemingly longing glances they cast each other suggests the complementary and co-dependent relationship between all human beings as presented through a silent waltz between man and woman.
