About the artwork

Marie until 2/6/19 In this work, Auguste incorporates an amalgamation of various pop-culture icons and symbols, such as Marilyn Monroe and Captain America, which are superimposed onto a cutout of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Marilyn Monroe was an actress who despite her incredible fame tragically died young after struggling with many issues, while Captain America is an incredibly popular and idolised superhero character. By superimposing these images onto the forms of two much loved cartoon characters, Auguste makes a statement about the way we perceive prominent figures in the ever-pervasive media we consume, the pedestals we place them on, and the difference their idolised facades can be from reality.

About the artist

Born in 1977, French artist Auguste hails from the famed Bordeaux region of France. Though he studied disciplines other than fine arts, Auguste always felt compelled and drawn to the art world. Ultimately he followed his passion for the visual arts, finding his unique artistic vision and voice and is now known for his colorful contemporary Pop Art-inspired and nostalgia-evoking works.
Auguste terms his oeuvre “Generations” as his works revolve around a central theme of pop culture icons from the past. Conjuring memories of previous eras, his pieces depict celebrities, super heroes and other iconic figures, in conjunction with American and French marks to provide the viewer with a reminiscent glimpse of past epochs.
